For nine summers in a row, my parents left me out of the family vacation so my brother could have what they called a “complete family.

Part 1: The Summers I Was Never Invited
My mother stood outside my bedroom, gently pushing the door open after noticing how quiet the house had become.

“Have you already gone?”

The room answered her before anyone else could. Every shelf had been cleared, the closet stood empty, and nothing remained except a single envelope resting neatly in the middle of the bed with my name written across the front. By the time she unfolded the letter, I was already hundreds of miles away, leaving behind the home I had spent eighteen years trying to belong to.

That departure hadn’t been impulsive. I had imagined it for years because every summer of my childhood reminded me that I occupied a different place in my parents’ hearts. For nine consecutive years, they packed my suitcase, drove me to Aunt Linda’s house in Colorado, and repeated the same explanation as though saying it often enough would make it fair.

“Your brother deserves one-on-one family time.”
