I married my closest friend — before our fifth wedding anniversary, I overheard him say, “She walked right into MY TRAP.
My plan is about to work.”
Matthew and I seemed like we were meant for each other.
Our families lived next door to one another.
We went to preschool together and later attended the same school.
We were practically inseparable.
He always backed me in everything, just as I supported him.
Whenever someone made fun of me at school, he stood up for me.
When exams were coming up, we studied together.
When prom came around, he was my prince, the one who asked me to prom.
Everyone said we’d end up getting married one day.
We laughed about it, but that’s exactly what happened.
By the time we were in high school, we’d fallen in love.
After we graduated from college, Matthew asked me:
“Will you marry me?”
Of course, my answer was an immediate “yes.”
I was the happiest woman alive.
It all felt so perfect, like nothing could ever ruin it.
We even moved into a new house in the same neighborhood.
As our fifth wedding anniversary approached, I wanted to buy Matthew something special.
So I told him I was going to work, but I’d actually taken the day off because I’d ordered a watch for him from a store on the other side of town.
Excited and carrying his gift, I hurried home, thinking Matthew was still at work.
I opened the front door and froze.
He was talking to SOMEONE on the phone in the living room.
When I heard him say my name, I quickly hid behind the door so he wouldn’t see me.
At first, I thought he was planning some kind of surprise for me.
But then he said:
“Don’t worry!
She walked right INTO MY TRAP back in high school.”
My heart started pounding so hard that I thought it would burst out of my chest.
Matthew continued:
“My plan is about to work.
I’ve been planning this ever SINCE we were teenagers.”
When I heard WHAT HE SAID NEXT, I ran out of the house in tears.
I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard.
It felt like I’d stepped into a nightmare.
What did Matthew say next?
Comment “NEXT” if you want Part 2.

PART 2

I didn’t hear the rest.
I couldn’t.
My legs carried me to the car before my mind could even process what he’d said.
But my phone was still connected to the house Bluetooth.
I hadn’t turned it off.
That’s when I heard the voice on the other end of the call.
It was his mother.
“You better make sure she signs those papers before the anniversary dinner,” she said coldly.
“Once her name is on that document, everything she owns becomes ours.
Her grandmother’s house.
Her savings.
All of it.”
Matthew laughed softly.
“Relax, Mom.
She trusts me completely.
She always has.
That’s the beauty of it.”
I gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white.
My hands were shaking.
The watch I’d bought him was still sitting on the passenger seat in its little box.
I couldn’t breathe.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text message from an unknown number.
Three words.
“Check your prenup.”
I opened my glove compartment and pulled out the folder I’d never actually read.
I’d trusted Matthew to handle everything.
When I flipped to page four, my bl00d went cold.
There was a clause I’d never noticed.
