Eight Months Pregnant, I Was Cornered by My Husband’s Family
He had made it while holding a pen meant to sign away my control.
Walter reached toward me again.
I shifted my feet, braced my shoulder against the counter, and brought the skillet up between my body and his advancing hand.
The movement sent another wave of agony through my burned palm.
My breath came in short, uneven pulls.
My other arm remained locked around my stomach.
The baby had been active during dinner.
Now, in the chaos and pain, I could not tell what I was feeling.
That uncertainty terrified me more than Walter did.
“Stay back,” I said.
My voice sounded rough but clear.
Walter stopped for half a heartbeat.
His eyes dropped to the skillet and then returned to my face.
He seemed offended that I had armed myself with the nearest object available.
Lorraine stepped away from the stove.
“Put that down,” she snapped.
I stared at Walter.
“No.”
Corey finally moved, but only one step.
“Dani, please don’t make this worse.”
The words nearly broke something inside me.
I had been struck in the stomach while carrying his child.
His mother had called for a second blow.
His stepfather was advancing on me again.
Yet Corey looked at the weapon in my burned hand and decided I was the person making things worse.
The skillet trembled, not from doubt but from the strain of holding it.
The hot iron continued searing my palm.
I could feel the damage happening.
I could also see Walter measuring the distance between us.
He was deciding whether I would actually defend myself.
Lorraine was deciding whether her authority still mattered.
Corey was deciding how long he could remain neutral while his wife and unborn child stood in danger three feet away.
I had already made my decision.
I was no longer waiting for my husband to grow a spine.
I was no longer explaining why my body belonged to me.
I was no longer asking the people in that kitchen to recognize a boundary they had already chosen to violate.
I was a cornered mother with nowhere left to retreat.
Walter’s fingers opened as he reached for me again.
I tightened my burned hand around the skillet handle, planted my feet as firmly as my shaking body allowed, and prepared to protect the life beneath my heart.
