My husband mortgaged our apartment without my knowledge. The truth came to light through a single letter from the bank.
Olga stood at the kitchen window, watching her neighbor hang laundry on the balcony. He did this every day with almost clockwork precision: first towels, then shirts, and finally socks. Sometimes she found herself envious of his predictability and order.
Her own life seemed equally orderly.
Work, home, husband, weekends at their parents’. They’d paid off their mortgage six months earlier. For ten years, they’d saved on everything, denying themselves vacations, new clothes, and major pleasures. Finally, they could say the apartment was theirs.
At least that’s what she thought.
That evening, she went downstairs to collect her mail. Among the bills, she noticed a thick letter with the logo of a foreign bank. The envelope was addressed to her husband, Sergei.
At first, she wanted to put it aside. However, the formal appearance of the package made her uneasy. She opened the envelope and quickly scanned the contents.
After a moment the world literally spun.
The bank reported arrears in repayment of a loan secured by a mortgage on their apartment. The debt exceeded three and a half million rubles, excluding interest and contractual penalties.
Olga read the letter again. Then a third time.
The address was correct. The owners’ details were correct as well.
There was no mistake.
At that moment she heard a key turning in the lock.
Sergei returned home in a good mood. He was holding a box of his wife’s favorite éclairs. However, his smile vanished immediately when he saw the envelope in her hands.
“What is this?” she asked in a calm, unnaturally cool voice.
The man turned pale.
« Olu, I wanted to tell you. I really did. It just wasn’t the right moment. These are temporary problems. »
– Temporary problems? The bank is threatening to repossess our apartment! Where did this loan come from?
Sergei was silent for a long time.
He eventually admitted that he had invested money in a venture recommended by his mother.
My mother-in-law’s friend, a certain Vitaly Pavlovich, allegedly offered an exceptionally profitable investment program. He promised huge profits and a quick return on capital.
« I meant well, » he explained. « I was thinking about our future. About a house, a car, a better life. »
Olga listened in silence.
But what scared her most was something else.
– Our apartment is co-owned. How could the bank accept it as security without my signature?
There was a long silence.
Sergei lowered his head.
« I took your passport while you were sleeping. And the signature… I signed it myself. »
In an instant, everything they had built over the years collapsed.
It wasn’t about money anymore.
It was about trust.
About betrayal.
