After almost twenty minutes, the pavement changed.
He did not identify himself with a long speech. He spoke clearly, quickly, with the precision of fear that has already found a target.
“My husband tries to leave my youngest daughter in a center without my consent. I have evidence. The girl does not want to stay. I think he’s falsifying documents and saying I’m unstable. I’m out of the place. I need help now.
They told him that units were on their way.
He returned to the crack.
Inside, Daniel was still talking.
“The mother works a lot. The girl is becoming a problem. He cries, resists, lies. You know what they’re like. A woman alone cannot do everything.
Veronica almost laughed.
So that was it.
Not a criminal network. Not something darker than it already was. He wanted to get rid of the hindrance. Of the girl. Of his discomfort. Of the daughter who prevented him from playing the quiet man while she worked and he decided who was left over in the house.
Anger gave him a clean lucidity.
He pushed the metal door on the side and entered.
The blow made everyone turn around.
Emilia was the first to stand up.
“Mom!
Daniel froze, as if he had seen a dead man.
“What are you doing here?” he snapped.
Veronica walked straight to the table and took her daughter by the hand.
“I’ve come to take my daughter.
The woman in the uniform stood up, tense.
“Ma’am, you can’t break in like that. We are carrying out an assessment authorized by the tutor present.
“The guardian cannot authorize any internment by hiding it from the mother and lying about my mental health,” Veronica replied. I’ve already recorded everything. The police are on their way.
The color went from his face.
Daniel tried to regain control.
“Veronica, you’re exaggerating. It is only an evaluation because Emilia has problems adapting.
Emilia has a stepfather who sneaks her out during the day to convince strangers that her mother is useless.
The girl squeezed his hand.
“Mom, I didn’t want to come.
Veronica bent down right away.
“I know, my love. I’m already here.
Daniel took a step toward them.
“Don’t fill his head. This was for their good.
“Don’t come close.
The order came out so firm that even he stopped.
The woman in uniform tried to intervene again, this time nervous.
“Maybe we can sit down and talk calmly…
“He’ll talk to the police,” Veronica said. And with the Ministry of Health, if this center receives minors with “initial consent” signed by a single adult while the mother is labeled as unstable without real evaluation.
That did break it down.
The front door opened just then. Two police officers entered, followed by a woman from social work. Veronica almost cried with relief.
Daniel changed his face in a second. He wanted to become the worried father.
“Officers, it’s good that you arrived. My wife is very impulsive and—
“I have video,” Veronica said, handing over her cell phone without letting go of Emilia. Of him signing, of them talking about internment, and of my daughter saying that she does not want to stay.
The social worker knelt in front of Emilia.
“Hello, little one. Do you want to come with me for a moment?
Emilia looked at her mother.
“Only if you come.”
“I’m going with you,” Veronica said.
While one officer began to review documents and another separated Daniel, the woman in the uniform tried to justify herself: that it was a support program, that the father spoke of absenteeism, of defiant behavior, of an overwhelmed mother. Each word sank her deeper.
Because now there was a witness.
Because now there was video.
Because now the girl was talking.
In a small room, with drawings of suns and clouds pasted on the walls, Emilia ended up saying the phrase that Veronica finished breaking and ordering at the same time:
“Dad told me that if I stayed here for a few nights, you were going to rest and you weren’t going to be angry about me anymore.
Veronica closed her eyes for a second.
So also the blame.
That too had been put on the back of a four-year-old girl.
They did not return to the house that night.
They went first to the public prosecutor’s office, then to Veronica’s sister’s house. There were statements, a review of the center, calls to the school, confirmation of hidden absenteeism, signatures, lawyers. Daniel insisted that he only wanted “specialized help,” that Veronica was always tired, that Emilia needed structure. But no one listened to him the same anymore.
Mrs. Barragán, when Veronica told her days later, put her hand to her chest and said:
“That’s why the girl was always so quiet…
