Her Husband Abandoned Her at the Hospital for His Mistress, but He Never Imagined Who the Surgeon Saving Her Life Really Was
« Dr. Carter… the Whitmore family’s attorneys are already calling. They’re questioning whether— »
Owen turned to face him.
« She is in imminent danger. Her consent has been documented, and emergency treatment is fully authorized under hospital protocol. »
His voice turned colder.
« If anyone in this building is more concerned about her husband’s approval than saving her life… »
He looked around the room.
« …they can walk out of my operating room right now. »
No one moved.
Minutes later, Claire was rushed upstairs.
As the surgical team pushed her bed toward the elevator, her eyelids drifted closed again.
Owen leaned over her.
« Stay with us. »
The elevator doors closed.
The surgery lasted more than three hours.
The infection had spread far beyond what the scans had revealed.
Twice Claire’s blood pressure crashed.
Twice alarms echoed through the operating room.
Each time, Owen never raised his voice.
« We’re not losing her. »
« Keep going. »
Hour after hour, he removed infected tissue, repaired the damage, and stopped the infection that had nearly claimed her life.
Finally…
The last suture was placed.
The room slowly relaxed.
Nurses began cleaning instruments.
The anesthesiologist recorded Claire’s stable vitals.
But Owen remained where he stood, staring down at his sister.
She was alive.
Barely.
The delay had almost cost her everything.
And somewhere else in Boston…
Her husband was having dinner with another woman.
It was nearly midnight when Grant Whitmore finally answered his phone.
He was seated in a private waterfront restaurant overlooking Boston Harbor.
Soft golden light reflected off crystal wine glasses.
Vanessa sat beside him, laughing at something he’d just said.
His phone buzzed again.
Annoyed, he glanced at the screen.
Massachusetts General Hospital.
He sighed before answering.
« This better be important. »
The hospital director didn’t waste a second.
« Mr. Whitmore, your wife underwent emergency surgery tonight. »
Grant frowned.
« What? »
« She developed a life-threatening infection. Dr. Owen Carter operated immediately. »
Silence.
Then Grant asked the question that made everyone in the room freeze.
« Is she still alive? »
