« Please… don’t make me. »
I knelt down in front of her and spoke as gently as possible.
« Clara, no one here is going to force you to do anything. We’ll leave the bathroom door open, and we’ll go at your pace. »
After a long silence, she gave a tiny nod.
As the warm water touched her shoulders, she remained completely still, as if she were waiting for something terrible to happen.
« You are safe now, » I whispered.
She didn’t answer.
When it was time to rinse her hair, I smiled gently.
« Can you lean forward just a little bit? »
She did.
And then…
I froze.
