I Fed My Neighbor’s Son for Years—20 Years Later, He Returned With a Mysterious Box

Even the cash Richard kept hidden around the house.

Anything small enough to carry and valuable enough to sell had disappeared.

Richard stood in the doorway with his arms folded.

“Told you so.”

After that…

we never spoke about Liam again.

I couldn’t bring myself to confront his parents.

They had always been harsh and controlling, and part of me worried about what might happen to Liam if I created trouble.

But I still couldn’t understand why he would s.t.e.a.l from me after everything we had shared.

He never called.

Never wrote.

For twenty years, I heard absolutely nothing from him.

Then one afternoon, my doorbell camera chimed.

I opened the feed.

A tall man in a dark suit was standing on my porch.

He held a large black box in both arms.

At first, I didn’t recognize him.

Then he ran one hand through his hair.

That same nervous gesture he had made since childhood.

“Liam?” I asked through the speaker.

He looked toward the camera.

“Yes, Mrs. Hayes.”

My heart nearly stopped.

I hurried to the door.

“Is it really you? Oh my God, it’s been so long. Are you okay? Where have you been?”

The questions came faster than he could answer.

The truth was…

I had forgiven him years ago.

Whatever reason Liam had for taking those things no longer seemed as important.

Seeing him standing there—grown, healthy, and alive—brought back something I thought I had lost long ago.

Until that moment, I hadn’t realized how much I had missed him.

But Liam wasn’t smiling.

“I only came to give you this.”

He placed the black box in my hands.

It was much heavier than I expected.

For one foolish second, hope rushed through me.

Maybe my grandmother’s earrings were inside.

My mother’s ring.

Maybe everything that had disappeared twenty years earlier had somehow been kept safe.

I slowly lifted the lid.

Nothing inside belonged to me.

I opened it farther…

and gasped.

The box slipped from my hands and crashed onto the porch.

I stumbled backward.

Then I looked up at Liam.

And suddenly…

I finally understood why Richard had never wanted him inside our home.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The black box lay on its side between us.

The lid had fallen open.

A stack of old photographs, folded papers, envelopes, and several small objects had spilled across the porch boards.

I barely noticed any of them.

My eyes were fixed on the photograph lying faceup near my shoe.

Richard.

My husband.

Twenty years younger.

Standing beside Liam’s mother.

Not casually.

Not like neighbors.

His arm was wrapped around her waist.

And she was kissing him.

I looked down at the picture.

Then up at Liam.

Then back at the picture.

My mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Liam stood perfectly still.

His jaw was tight.

His eyes looked nothing like the eyes of the skinny little boy who used to sit at my kitchen table with chocolate smeared around his mouth.

“What is this?”

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Liam swallowed.

“Pick up the other photo.”

I didn’t want to.

Everything inside me screamed not to.
