I Fed My Neighbor’s Son for Years—20 Years Later, He Returned With a Mysterious Box

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The black box lay on its side between us.

The lid had fallen open.

A stack of old photographs, folded papers, envelopes, and several small objects had spilled across the porch boards.

I barely noticed any of them.

My eyes were fixed on the photograph lying faceup near my shoe.

Richard.

My husband.

Twenty years younger.

Standing beside Liam’s mother.

Not casually.

Not like neighbors.

His arm was wrapped around her waist.

And she was kissing him.

I looked down at the picture.

Then up at Liam.

Then back at the picture.

My mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Liam stood perfectly still.

His jaw was tight.

His eyes looked nothing like the eyes of the skinny little boy who used to sit at my kitchen table with chocolate smeared around his mouth.

“What is this?”

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Liam swallowed.

“Pick up the other photo.”

I didn’t want to.

Everything inside me screamed not to
