I love doves, but I didn’t know their presence meant that.
Food: If you have bird feeders, crumbs on your balcony, or seeds in your garden, the collared dove, which is granivorous, will simply come to feed.
Water: A water source (birdbath, puddle, swimming pool) attracts them, especially in warm weather.
A nesting site: Collared doves, very common in cities, like to nest in dense trees, but sometimes also on sheltered man-made structures (wide windowsills, roof beams). If you see two of them going back and forth with twigs, a nest is being built.
What should you do if a turtle dove takes up residence in your home?
Regardless of your interpretation, the presence of a turtle dove is generally harmless. If it decides to nest on your balcony, try not to disturb it during the nesting period (approximately six weeks between egg-laying and fledging). This is a unique opportunity to observe nature up close.
