I woke up to the sound of a key and saw my own aunt going through my mother’s purse.

She wanted to tell her everything at once, but she remembered that Leticia had said someone would call before seven. If those responsible discovered that Daniela was home, they could change their plan, return for the bracelet, or erase any other evidence.

“I feel a little better,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “What time are you getting here?”

“Maybe sooner than I thought. Your dad just texted me.” Daniela stopped breathing.
Mariana and her husband had been separated for three years. He almost never called, much less showed up unannounced.

“My dad?”

“Yes. He says he needs to talk to me about something urgent and that he’s expecting me at the apartment at four. I don’t know how he got permission to leave work, but he seems worried.”
Daniela looked at her watch.
It was 3:31.

“Mom… did Óscar text you?”

“Of course. What other dad do you have?” Mariana replied, trying to joke. “I’m just leaving. We’ll be there in less than half an hour.”
They arrived. Daniela pressed her cell phone to her ear.

“Is he with you?”

“He’s waiting for me in the parking lot. He says he wants to come up with me because he also needs to talk to you.” Daniela watched Leticia’s video again.

“Oscar, I’ve done my part.”

The man who had planned to plant a stolen jewel in Mariana’s purse wasn’t a stranger, nor was he the secret lover of a desperate woman.

He was Daniela’s father.

And now he was on his way to the apartment with the same woman he intended to send to prison.

Type PHOTO and I’ll continue.

3:34.

I had less than half an hour.

Her first impulse was to take the bracelet out of her bag and hide it.

He didn’t.

If he disappeared, Leticia and Óscar would know that someone had discovered the plan.

In contrast, Daniela kept copies of the video and photographs, sent them to herself, and contacted the authorities to explain what she had witnessed.

Then he called his mother.

—Mom, listen to me without asking questions. Don’t go up to the apartment with Dad.

—Daniela, what’s wrong?

—Stay in a public place. And don’t tell him I called you.

Mariana noticed something in his voice.

Are you in danger?

—No. But I need you to trust me.

There were a few seconds of silence.

-OK.

At 3:52, Daniela heard a key.

The door opened.

Oscar went in alone.

—Daniela?

She remained hidden in her room, recording.

Oscar walked straight to Mariana’s purse.

He opened it.

She looked for the white bag.

And then he did something Daniela didn’t expect.

She took out her phone and took a picture of the bracelet inside the bag.

Then he called someone.

“That’s perfect,” he said. “When the police arrive, they’ll have the jewelry and also the report about her access to the mall.”

Leticia’s voice answered from the loudspeaker:

—And what about us?

Oscar let out a small laugh.

—With Mariana out of the way, everything will be easier.

Daniela felt nauseous.

It no longer seemed like just an attempt to frame his mother.

There was something else.Oscar hung up and left the apartment.

Daniela waited until she heard the elevator.

Then he received a message from Mariana:

“I’m at the cafe across the street. Your father told me to come up alone. What’s going on?”

Daniela replied:

“Stay there.”

What happened next destroyed the plan in a matter of hours.

The recordings showed Leticia putting on the bracelet.

The second video showed Oscar checking that he was still there.

And Daniela’s photographs documented the scene before Mariana returned.

When the authorities investigated the robbery, they also found contradictions in the versions given by Óscar and Leticia.

But the test that changed everything appeared in an unexpected place.

A photograph taken during a party weeks earlier.

In it, Leticia appeared reflected in a mirror while talking to a man.

It was Oscar.

On the table next to them was documentation related to one of the affected premises.

Mariana immediately recognized the papers.

“Those documents came from my office,” he whispered.

Daniela looked at her.

—Could Dad get them?

Mariana slowly shook her head.

-No.

Then he understood.

—But Leticia did have a copy of my keys.

The subsequent investigation allowed for the reconstruction of connections between the robbery, the internal information, and the attempt to point the finger at Mariana.

Daniela handed over everything she had kept and let the authorities determine who was responsible.

Oscar tried to blame Leticia.

Leticia stated that Óscar had organized everything.

The pact that seemed so solid when they thought they had Mariana trapped disappeared as soon as they had to respond separately.

Mariana was never arrested.

The bracelet also failed to become the evidence against her that they had hoped for.

It became evidence of the setup.

That night, mother and daughter returned to the apartment together after it was safe to do so.

Mariana sat down on the sofa.He looked like he had aged several years in a single day.

“Your own father…” he murmured.

Daniela sat down next to her.

—I’m sorry, Mom.

Mariana shook her head.

—You didn’t do anything.

Then he looked at her.

—How did you discover everything?

Daniela hesitated.

—Because I pretended to be sick so I wouldn’t have to take an exam.

Mariana blinked.

-That?

For the first time in hours, Daniela almost smiled.

—I think I’m going to have to submit it for recovery now.

Mariana let out a weak laugh that ended up turning into tears.

Daniela hugged her.

She had spent the entire morning feeling guilty about a small lie.

But she had left that lie at home when Leticia thought there was no one there.

It allowed him to listen to a call.

Record a video.

Take a photograph.

And to prevent a bracelet worth almost nine hundred thousand pesos from turning an innocent woman into the perfect suspect.

Daniela looked at that first photo on her phone again.

Hours earlier it had only been a blurry image taken with trembling hands.

Now it represented the exact moment when Oscar and Leticia’s plan had begun to fall apart.

They had chosen the perfect bag.

The perfect victim.

The perfect story.

They only made one mistake.

They never imagined that that afternoon, behind a door that should have been empty, there was a daughter watching everything.
