My father-in-law came to see the house my parents had bought for me, but when my husband started renting rooms to his family and asked for the keys, a single sentence made his father turn pale…
At the time, Aaron laughed and said it was only there to make everyone feel comfortable.
Apparently, he had never read it.
Gerald glared at me angrily.
« You tricked my son. »
My father took a step forward.
« No. Your son lied to you. »
Aaron tried to defend himself.
“I wanted to tell her after everyone had settled in.”
« After? » I asked. « After you had brought people into my home? »
“My family needs help,” he said. “You have empty rooms.”
“My baby has a nursery,” I replied. “My parents have a guest room. This house has peace. Your plans don’t.”
Gerald looked at Aaron.
« Bring your wife under control. »
My mother spoke for the first time.
« It’s not a piece of furniture that you can simply move around in a house. »
At that moment, my phone vibrated.
It was a message from my lawyer: at the entrance gate. A police officer is with me as requested.
Gerald noticed the message and mocked it.
« You called the police because of your own family? »
I opened the door.
My lawyer entered, carrying a folder, followed by an official.
“No,” I said. “I called them because Aaron changed the registered address of five relatives to this house without my permission.”
Then my lawyer contacted Aaron.
« And because someone tried to claim this property as joint marital property for a loan. »
Aaron froze.
The documents showed that he had tried to use the house as collateral for a business loan linked to his father’s company. My signature was on the application – but it wasn’t mine.
Gerald immediately said:
« Family businesses sometimes need some flexibility. »
The official looked at him.
« Forgery is not called flexibility. »
Aaron turned to his father.
« You said it would be harmless. »
For the first time, Gerald had no answer.
My father took my mother’s hand.
« We have entrusted our daughter to you. »
Aaron glanced at my stomach and then looked away.
« I wanted to pay everything back before she found out. »
« You were prepared to risk my home before our child was even born, » I said.
At that moment, my marriage was over in my heart.
The official took down the statements. My lawyer clarified that no one was allowed to move in without permission, no keys could be copied, and no financial decisions regarding the property could be made without legal action.
Gerald stormed off in a rage. His wife followed him in tears.
Aaron stayed behind and looked around the house.
« It should be ours, » he whispered.
“No,” I said. “It should be safe.”
Within a week, my lawyer filed for divorce and reported the forged signature. Gerald’s loan went bust, and his company lost the investor he had previously boasted about everywhere.
Aaron moved back into his parents’ basement – to a place where he no longer owned any rooms to divide up.
My parents stayed with me until the baby was born. My father built the crib. My mother planted roses next to the front steps.
Many people say that a house becomes a home when family fills it with life.
That’s not true.
A house becomes a home when the people in it stop calling others « family » while those others treat them like property.
