My husband and I ended our marriage after thirty-six years together. Then, at his funeral, his father drank too much, leaned toward me, and whispered something that made me question everything I thought I knew.

The church was full of people who remembered us as a couple. Old friends approached me with sad smiles and offered their condolences.

“He was a good man,” they said.

“I’m sorry for your loss.”

I thanked them, even though I didn’t know whether I still had the right to grieve him.

Near the end of the service, Troy’s father, Frank, approached me.

He was eighty-one and clearly unsteady. His eyes were red, and his voice was thick with emotion.

“You still don’t know, do you?” he said.

I stepped back.

“Know what?”

Frank glanced around before leaning closer.

“The money. The hotel. You thought he was seeing someone.”

My entire body went still.

“What are you talking about?”

He shook his head slowly.

“There was no other woman.”

I stared at him, waiting for an explanation.

Frank gripped my arm as though he needed help standing.
