My Son Came Home with a Baby—and One Sentence That Changed Everything
My twenty-year-old son had been missing for a year.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday night in October, he showed up on my porch holding a newborn baby.

He didn’t say hello. He didn’t say I’m sorry. He just stood there, soaked through, holding a bundle wrapped in a yellow hospital blanket, and looked at me like a little boy again.

“Mom,” he said. “She’s gone.”

Three words. That’s all it took to knock the floor out from under me.

My name is Gloria Carter. I’m fifty-one years old, I’ve lived in Ashford Ridge, Georgia my whole life, and I thought I already knew the worst night of my life — the night my son walked out the door and didn’t come back. I was wrong. The worst night was the one that came a year later, standing on my own porch, realizing I didn’t know half of what had really happened.
