A Sudden Crisis That Changed Everything

There are moments in life that divide everything into “before” and “after.” For me, that moment came in the middle of the night, under the harsh lights of a hospital hallway.

My thirteen-year-old son, Andrew, had gone out for a simple walk with his father. It was supposed to be ordinary—just fresh air, a quick conversation, and then dinner at home.

Instead, it ended in an emergency.

When I arrived at the hospital, Andrew was already unconscious, surrounded by machines and medical staff. The steady rhythm of the monitors was the only sign that he was still fighting.

Just hours earlier, he had been full of energy, joking as he walked out the door. I had reminded him, like always, to take his inhaler—just in case. He had smiled, half amused, half impatient.

I never imagined that would be the last normal moment we would share.
