A CEO disguised as a cleaner discovered the truth about his company.
The meeting that changed everything
Thirty minutes later, tension reigned in the boardroom.
Arthur suddenly summoned all the directors and managers. Such meetings never meant anything good.
Once everyone was seated, he entered the room in an elegant graphite suit.
There was silence.
“I spent this morning on our floors,” he began calmly. “Not as CEO. As a new cleaning employee.”
He placed cheap glasses and a sign saying, « Caution, wet floor, » on the table.
At that moment Veronica turned pale.
“It was you…” she whispered.
« Yes, » he replied. « It was me. »
He then addressed everyone present.
« I learned more about this company in three hours than I did in three years of reports. I saw interns being ridiculed. I heard arrogance presented as strength. And this morning I watched a man publicly humiliated simply because he was deemed unimportant. »
Then he looked straight at Veronica.
— I also saw you kick a bucket of dirty water at a man you considered inferior to you.
“Arthur, I didn’t know…” she began.
« That’s the point, » he interrupted. « If you had shown some respect to someone you thought was just a janitor, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. »
After a moment he pressed the intercom button.
— Security to the boardroom.
Veronica turned even paler.
— I’ve been working here for ten years…
« And you’ll be gone in a moment, » he replied coldly. « You’re fired. Immediately. »
When security escorted the woman out, no one came to her defense.
Arthur turned to the others.
—Anyone who laughed, ignored the situation, or passively watched will be placed on probation. You will all undergo mandatory training in leadership ethics and respect for employees.
No one protested.
The President also introduced a new rule.
Each new member of management was expected to spend their first week working alongside technicians, cleaners or postal staff.
“If you can’t respect the foundations of this company, you have no right to run it,” he said.
That same evening, as he was leaving the building, he met the cleaning crew starting their night shift.
A young worker with a bucket and mop straightened nervously when he saw him.
Arthur held out his hand to him.
— Good evening. I’m Arthur. Thank you for your work. It’s really important.
The man looked at him in surprise.
— I’m David, sir.
— Nice to meet you, David.
As Arthur stepped out onto the cool streets of Chicago, the company’s luminous sign glowed above his head.
That day he lost one of the most important people on the board.
However, he recovered something much more valuable.
The soul of your company.
