A little girl walked into a police station to confess to a serious crime, but what she eventually told the officer left him completely bewildered.

— Thank you very much, — said the father, visibly relieved. — Darling, this is the police uncle. Just tell him what you wanted to say.

The girl looked intently at the man in uniform, sniffed briefly, and asked:

— Are you really a police officer?

— Of course, — he smiled. — Can’t you see my uniform?

The girl nodded.

— I… I’ve done something terrible, — she said, stammering.

— Go ahead, — replied the officer calmly. — I am a police officer. You can tell me anything.

— Are you going to put me in prison afterwards? — she asked with a trembling voice.

— That depends on what you have done, — he said kindly.

The girl could no longer control her emotions. She burst into tears and almost immediately blurted out something that left everyone around her completely speechless.

— I hit my little brother really hard on the leg… Now he has a bruise. And he’s dying… I didn’t want to do it. Please, don’t put me in prison…

The officer was stunned at first, but then could not suppress a smile. He gently put his arms around the crying girl and said softly:

— No, sweetie. Your little brother will be fine. People don’t die from a bruise.

The girl looked at him with tears in her eyes.

– Really and truly?

— It’s true. But you must never do something like that again, okay?

— And…

— Do you promise that?

— I promise…

The little girl wiped away her tears, snuggled close to her mother, and for the first time in several days, the police station became quiet and silent again.
