AITA for Telling My Brother « It Takes Two to Tango »?
My older brother, Cameron (34M), has been married to his high school sweetheart, Alina, ever since they were both 19. They’ve always had what seemed like a very traditional marriage.
Alina grew up in an extremely conservative Christian family. She was one of eleven children, her father worked full-time, and her mother stayed home raising the kids. Ever since I can remember, Alina has wanted that same life for herself—a large family and the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom.
When they got engaged, everyone in our family tried to have a realistic conversation with Cameron. We reminded him that supporting a household on a single income, especially one with several children, would require an incredibly stable career and a solid financial plan. He brushed off everyone’s concerns, insisting he had everything figured out.
To this day, I still have no idea what that « plan » was.
Fifteen years later, they have five children, a sixth on the way, and they’re struggling financially. Cameron has borrowed money from our parents multiple times over the years. My parents always end up helping because they can’t stand the thought of their grandchildren going without basic necessities.
Last night, Cameron called me to vent.
He sounded completely exhausted. He said he was tired of working nonstop just to keep the family afloat and admitted something he’d apparently been keeping to himself: he wasn’t happy about Alina’s latest pregnancy.
He told me he’d been trying to convince her to get a job so they could finally have a second income, but now that she’s expecting again, he feels like that conversation is off the table for years.
I sympathized with how overwhelmed he felt. Supporting a family of eight is an enormous responsibility.
But then I told him something he clearly wasn’t expecting to hear.
I said that while I understood why he was frustrated, he couldn’t place all the blame on Alina. She has always been upfront about wanting to stay home and have a big family. None of this was a surprise.
More importantly, I pointed out that the sixth pregnancy didn’t happen by magic.
He asked what I meant.
I replied, « It takes two to tango. »
The line didn’t go over well.
He immediately started cursing at me before hanging up.
Now I’m wondering if I crossed a line.
From my perspective, I wasn’t trying to attack him. I was trying to remind him that he has agency in his own marriage. If he no longer wants more children or realizes this lifestyle isn’t sustainable, that’s a conversation he needs to have with his wife. But acting as though the situation is entirely her fault ignores the fact that every one of those pregnancies required both of them.
So… AITA?
