“Pack your things and go, you have an hour!” my husband said at 2 a.m. He didn’t know that in the morning I would have to pick up not only my things but everything else as well.
A new life began at dawn
“You can’t do this to me,” he said.
– I can.
– I don’t even have money to go back.
– You wanted freedom. Now you have it.
I hung up.
Later, I stood at the window and watched the city awaken. Somewhere there was the man with whom I had spent twenty years of my life.
Did I feel sorry for him?
A bit.
Just like you regret old shoes that have served you well for years, but have become water-tight and no longer wearable.
Before noon, the head of security came to the office.
– Mrs. Olga, Igor is standing at the gate. Wet and nervous. He demands entry.
I looked at my watch.
My new life lasted exactly eight hours.
“There’s no need to call the police,” I replied calmly. “Please give him the box with his personal belongings.”
– That’s all?
– That’s all. A mug, a fishing photo, and a stapler.
The security chief nodded and left.
I took a sip of coffee.
It has never tasted so good before.
It was bitter, strong and true.
For the first time in twenty years, I was not someone’s support, backup, or invisible mechanism driving someone else’s success.
I was just Olga.
And it turned out that this was completely sufficient.
